The Program
Brochure here.
YMCA Camp Spencer gives mentally challenged adult campers an opportunity to experience the out-of-doors first hand.  The camp also offers the opportunity for social and personal growth in a caring environment.  Campers have the chance to learn about the natural surroundings, develop new friendships and have fun in a wide variety of activities provided to capture their interest.  The camping experience offers a time for just-for-fun activities and skill development.  It is neither our intention nor desire to provide professional counseling or therapy.  Rather, the sessions are geared towards fun and enjoyment that make for a memorable camp experience.  The YMCA Camp Spencer is accredited with The American Camp Association (ACA).

The Staff
Staff members at YMCA Camp Spencer are very unique people and come from all walks of life.  Mainly college aged, they are chosen both on the basis of their feelings for and interest in special needs campers. The attitude is optimistic – there is a special kind of closeness between a YMCA Camp Spencer counselor and the camper.  This special relationship is of paramount importance to a successful program.  The development of a caring, competent, trained and enthusiastic counselor is no accident.  All staff members receive training prior to the opening of camp to ensure they will make each camper’s experience something to remember.  The ratio of campers to staff is approximately three to one.  The staff is responsible for the campers 24 hours a day.  Counselors include representatives from the fields of recreation, medicine, education, and social work.

Camp Spencer Features
YMCA Camp Spencer is located in Fombell, Pennsylvania, six miles west of Zelienople.  The camp is approximately 280 acres and is bordered by the Connoquenessing Creek.  Across the creek and easily accessible to our camp is YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee.

The site provides something for everyone.  A large, well-groomed athletic field gives more than ample space for a wide variety of camp activities.  A waterfront area provides large motor activities for the camper.  Hiking trails, some of which are paved for easy walking and wheelchair use, an outdoor theatre, campfire sites, climbing wall and a zip line add something special to their camping experience.  We use the heated outdoor swimming pool at Camp Kon-O-Kwee for our daily swim.

YMCA Camp Spencer has five main buildings on the grounds.  Two dormitory-style lodges (Volunteer & Thomson Lodges) house staff and campers.  The Snavely building serves as an activity center and houses supervisory staff.  The indoor climbing walls, kitchen and dining area along with an additional activity center are located inside the renovated Spencer Barn.  The Ryanwood cabin area provides a more rustic camping experience for a memorable overnight for selected campers.
