Camp
Kon-O-Kwee is 300 acres of fields and woodlands located along
the Connoquenessing Creek, 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, just
west of Zelienople. Our Camp, which is owned by the YMCA of Pittsburgh,
has been serving summer campers since 1926. Camp Kon-O-Kwee provides
outdoor adventure in an atmosphere which stresses the YMCA principle
of growth in spirit, mind, and body.
Campers
live in groups of six to eight, each group living in a cabin
within a Village designed by age groups. Modern bathhouses are
located in each village. Nourishing meals, and there is plenty
to eat, are served family style in our dining hall. Campers take
turns being "waiters" for their cabin mates, and everyone
is responsible for leaving the table and Dining Hall in clean
and orderly fashion.
Boating, tennis,
swimming, basketball, archery, fishing, riflery, and traditional
field sports are offered, as well as hiking, nature study, arts
& crafts, outdoor living skills, and campwide funfests.
Campers participate
in skits & talent nights, campfire activities, sing-a-longs,
and storytelling in the evenings. Each week of camp has a "theme"
for contests and parties, and campers here for the 4th of July
celebrate with all-day festivities. Horseback rides are offered
to 7-11 year old campers at an additional cost.
Our
campers also participate in the climbing adventure initiative
located in the Camp Spencer Barn, which was built in 1895. Camp
Spencer, also owned and operated by the YMCA of Pittsburgh, is
located just across the Connoquenessing Creek and is connected
to Camp Kon-O-Kwee by bridge.
Kon-O-Kwee
provides all of the sporting equipment and program supplies campers
need while they are here, and we also provide helmets for their
safety during horseback rides and climbing adventure initiative.
Campers must wear personal flotation devices approved by the
U.S. Coast Guard during all camp boating activities.
All campers
regardless of race, creed or religion are welcome at Camp Kon-O-Kwee.
